CARDINAL RULES OF STYLE! - Michelle Divine Boutique

CARDINAL RULES OF STYLE!

Whether you're a guy or gal, there's no doubt that having a well-stocked closet is essential. There is a reason why some people are always looking great, while others struggle to find that perfect outfit. I've been styling and dressing people for almost a decade now, and I've learned a thing or two about what works and what doesn't and it starts with your basic foundation. Here are my top 10 cardinal rules for building and maintaining an impeccable wardrobe that is not only stylish but can also transition throughout multiple seasons.

  1. Get organized- I mean, can you really thrive in clutter? Like really?!

  1. Find your style- This is your identity, who do you want to be?!

  1. Shop your closet first!- Take inventory of what is already in your closet and what you need. Save, repurpose and alter, donate and throw away as necessary! Don't spend more money on clothes than you can afford.

Hint: If you haven't worn or even looked at it in the last 6-12 months get rid of it!

  1. Make sure everything fits correctly- Love the skin you're in and that includes getting to know your body type! Clothes that don't fit properly are not only uncomfortable but they also make you look bad — which means they're not doing their job!

  1. Invest in nice basics and classic pieces that you can mix and match.- Trends and statement pieces are great, but they usually go out of style just as quickly as they came in. So I don't recommend building your wardrobe with a closet full of statement pieces.

  2. Mix high and low- It's all about proportion.

  3. Accessories are crucial- remember that accessories are key to making an outfit look complete. If you're wearing a dress and it doesn't look "finished," add some jewelry.

  4. Make sure you are wearing proper undergarments- Speaking of foundation...your undergarment choice can truly make the difference between a well polished look and looking unkempt. They are literally a part of the foundation for your outfit.

  5. Have fun with color!- Even if you're more of neutral-tone kinda girl like myself adding a pop of color can really liven up your look. Wear colors that compliment your skin tone, hair color and eye color.

  6. Don't wear everything all at once!- Having a great sense of style is also about knowing when to add and when to take away. Although layering is great when it comes to creating different looks, wearing more than one item at once can look messy and unbalanced if it is not executed properly.

Hint: If you are just getting started on your style journey I recommend to keep it simple. The more complicated or busy the style is, the harder it is to pull off.
